Proposed design

Bicyclists on the proposed sidepath come to the end of Clyde Street, and then they must cross in two crosswalks to continue west on Newton Street. What are bicyclists headed east on Newton Street supposed to do? Apparently, turn left and ride on the north sidewalk facing traffic -- or else, turn west across Clyde street, then south across Newton Street, in two crosswalks, before heading east on Newton Street.

Bicyclists on Newton Street, if coming from the east, must either ride on the sidewalk or else turn the corner and then enter at the crosswalk.

Bicyclists on the sidepath on the north side of Newton Street proposed in the South Brookline project must use two crosswalks to enter the proposed sidepath on Clyde Street. Crossing from right to left in a crosswalk is the most dangerous intersection maneuver for bicyclists.

The blue segment of the path on Clyde Street is for bicyclists and pedestrians only. The orange segment of this 12-foot-wide path also carries two-way motor traffic, including service vehicles -- the garbage truck, moving van, FedEx truck etc. The longer vehicles won't be able to turn around, so they will have to back in or drive up over a curb and across the grass.
