At Chrystie Street
Pedestrians stand in the bikeway. There is a short "bike box" intended for bicyclist left turns. This intersection offers no other legal way for cyclists to turn left except as pedestrians. A shared-lane marking inside the bike lane is nonstandard, because bike lanes are not supposed to be shared. Sara D. Roosevelt Park is in the background of the photo.

Faust: Chrystie St bike box - this block of Grand is often totally filled with cars and trucks backed up to the Bowery. It's usually very difficult to move along in the left to reach a left turn. The bike box allows cyclists to move past the stuck traffic and then move left to make a left turn from the bike box. There is also a very high pedestrian volume here because of the subway entrance on the far block - center of picture north side of Grand. The bike box keeps trucks well back from the crosswalk and greatly increases ped crossing safety. Blame the box on bikes, but it's a huge benefit to peds. This is where Grand shifts from one way eastbound to a two way street.
