Chain hazard, 1978
In this 1978 photo, the path that curves to the left in the photo leads to the tunnel under the Eliot bridge. The path that curves to the right goes behind the VFW building, whose shadow crosses the middleground of the picture. Now: did you notice the chain across the path? It is a safety feature of course, to keep motor vehicles from encroaching on a section of path which leads to nowhere they need to go. The author of these pages very nearly collided with that chain a few days before he took this photo. He saw the chain rather late, braked and went down in the pile of sand in the foreground. He may owe his life to that pile of sand.
