The newer path past "Hell's Half Acre" runs next to the Boulevard and then turns away from the Boulevard into a grassy area in front of a Veterans of Foreign Wars building just west of the Eliot Bridge. The path is at the right in the panorama above, and the driveway to the VFW post is at the left. The Metropolitan District Commission allowed the VFW post to be constructed in its parkland, probably reflecting gratitude for returning WWII veterans and giving them a good deal. However, this private encroachment on public parkland is inappropriate and also creates some problems with the paths, as we shall see.
