Drain grate
Just after Greene Street, this drain grate is below the level of the surrounding pavement, and has slots long enough to disturb the balance of bicycles with narrow tires. Either of the longitudinal steps at its sides could steer a bicycle out from under the rider. A bit farther along, at the left, there is a sunken plate whose edges could do the same thing --and then, yet another. Surface defects like this were of little concern in a parking lane, but now constitute hazards in a traveled part of the roadway. That is not to say that New York streets lack potholes and other hazards in the normally-traveled part of the roadway! Photo by John Schubert.
